What does it mean to be human?
Elijah Brighton is the face of the Human Resistance Movement. He’s the Olympic-level painter who refused an offer of immortality from the ascenders—the human/machine hybrids who run the world—in solidarity with the legacy humans who will never get a chance to live forever.
Too bad it’s all a complicated web of lies.
Worse, Eli’s not even entirely human. Few know about the ascenders’ genetic experiments that left him… different. Fewer know about the unearthly fugue state that creates his transcendent art—as well as a bridge that lets him speak to the dead. But the Resistance is the one place he can hide from the ascender who knows everything the fugue can do. Because if Marcus finds him, he’ll either use Eli for his own nefarious purposes… or destroy him once and for all.
The Duality Bridge is the second book in the Singularity series and the sequel to The Legacy Human. This thrilling new young adult science fiction series explores the intersection of mind, body, and soul in a post-Singularity world.
The Duality Bridge Singularity Series Book 2 eBook Susan Kaye Quinn
The Duality Bridge by Susan Kaye Quinn is the most beautifully written theological-wrapped-in-speculative fiction novel that I have ever read. I know that sounds like a crazy categorization for a book, but I can’t think of another way to describe it. At the core of the story is the question of our existence: if we decide to live forever, do we still have souls? Do we still need religion? In a time when we can shed our physical form and upload our consciousness to wherever we choose, what does life actually mean? This book is the second in Susan’s Singularity Series and picks up directly where The Legacy Human ends. Eli has been rescued and is now being pursued by anyone who thinks they can use him to fulfill their own purpose. He knows he isn’t quite human, but he isn’t sure what that makes him. He just knows everyone else thinks they know what he is and how he fits into their lives. In the meantime, he is trying to figure out where he stands with Kamali, quite possibly the most important person in his life, not just because of how much he loves her, but because of how she is able to help him with his powers. By Eli’s side also is his constant companion, Cyrus, ever loyal and kind.
Eli is one of my very favorite male characters. He is gentle, caring, introspective, and protective. The relationships he has with those in his life are deep and meaningful. Eli’s growth between The Legacy Human and The Duality Bridge is exceptional; he has started to come into his own and realize that he isn’t powerless, even if he isn’t who and what he was led to believe. By the end of the story, we realize that he is going to be a force to be reckoned with if and when necessary (as in, in the next book!).
I have always been interested in religions, mostly for how they reflect history – what was going on at a particular time in history that resulted in a certain set of beliefs? Plagues? Wars? Famine? The threads of Christianity and Buddhism woven throughout the story were a highlight for me. Yes, I enjoyed the action – these books are definitely action-packed – and I love the worlds that Susan creates. I never have a problem envisioning characters or locations. But even more so, I love the supposed juxtaposition between human enlightenment and spirituality. Are they really opposites? Or is one the natural consequence of the other?

The Duality Bridge Singularity Series Book 2 eBook Susan Kaye Quinn Reviews
I really liked the first book in this series, but I liked this one even more. In the first book, we get only a bit of a glimpse into Eli's "fugue" state and have very little idea what it means. We learn a lot more about that state in this book and it's really, really cool. I liked everything else in the book as well.
My only possible complaint is that the book's pace is blistering and it went by so fast that I felt a little disappointed when I hit the end and wished there were more. I'll definitely be reading the next one when it comes out. This is the best new book that I've read this year.
Elijah Brighton is human teenager and painter with a special gift for visiting the spiritual dimension and producing great art while in a "fugue state." His patron is Lenora, an ascender. She is part of an elite group of beings, formerly human, whose intellect and abilities have been radically enhanced technologically. Ascenders control the world, while humans are the lesser class. It is revealed that Elijah is the "bridge",i.e., a technologically enhanced human uniquely born as a baby, not an "enhanced" adult.
As the only survivor of an experiment secretly carried out by a group of acenders, he is sought by opposing groups for his potential powers. The book is a series of adventures, of capturing, freeing and recapturing Elijah as he experiments with the "fugue" to defeat the forces of evil
The book is fast-paced and an exciting read. I only wish Elija's personal, inner life were a bit more reason-centered and problem-solving, and a lot less a volcano of rage and volatile emotions. It feels like the way a woman writer with a femenine emotional outlook would describe Elijah's inner life. For me, it tends to get in the way of the pace of the book. However, for its storytelling qualities, I would continue to read the series.
In a world where technology has allowed humans to ascend beyond the need for a biological body, being human is rare. Being human and fighting the ascended...almost impossible. Susan Kaye Quinn has created a fascinating world where science meets religion, where technology meets the soul, and where asking questions might get you killed. This is the continuation of Eli' story from The Legacy Human (Singularity #1). Eli now understands the fugue state a little more, but his challenges have only begun. Can he save the people he loves? Can he avoid those who are hunting him? Can he answer the unanswerable question? This is another great book in Quinn's arsenal.
I was given a copy of this Advanced Reader's Copy (ARC) in return for an honest opinion.
This second book of the Singularity series by Susan Kaye Quinn definitely changes the game and ups the stakes. I really enjoyed the fact that I did not want to put it down because of all of the twists and turns and unexpected deviations in the plot development as well as the well-developed characters with depth; the depth of the characters developed through the first book and the this one as well. The author has an ability to develop worlds and her descriptions put me in the world she has created. I hope you will enjoy it like I did. I am excited for the next book as well. Go Susan!
Rather than merely picking up where the Legacy Human left off, the Duality Bridge launches the reader deeper into Eli’s adventure. Our favorite characters return to continue the long shot rebellion against the Ascenders, Eli explores his past and future, and of course, there are new characters have arrive, friend and foe. The plot twists are many, and the action astounding – there is fast paced, and then there is the Duality Bridge. I highly recommend this novel, an excellent entry into the Singularity Universe.
