Chicago private eye V. I. Warshawski knows from the start that Consuelo Alvarado's baby is trouble. Consuelo is 16. Diabetic. And the daughter of a friend. When she goes into labor too early, even V. I.'s wild drive to get her to the hospital can't save either Consuelo or her child.

Soon V. I. is investigating possible malpractice at the emergency room - and falling for a doctor who works there. Mixing business and love is always bad medicine, but V. I. finds herself listening to her heart, not her head. And when a brutal murder and the violent destruction of a woman's clinic put her at the center of a very dirty conspiracy, justice may be the only remedy for a hurt that cuts deep . . .and chills right to the bone.

Bitter Medicine (Audible Audio Edition) Sara Paretsky Sandra Burr Brilliance Audio Books

I like Paresky and I like her creation, V.I Warshawsky and this is one of the best so far. I have read probably 5 of these and will continue (by present intentions) thru the rest.

In this one, V.I. is drawn into the world of hospitals and the practice (and malpractice) of Medicine with all the discrepancies due to disparities of the wealth and class of the patients. She has taken a poor person to a hospital of the wealthy, where they kill her by indifference and then they must cover it up because V.I. is a lawyer and a P.I. High jinx and low jinx follow and V>I.get exhausted and her dear friend's threatened and extremely inconvenienced and V.I. (of course) almost gets killed.

Sobering side note is that the health care system is worse now in the early 21 st Century than it was in the last two decades of the 20th, even if you are optimistic about Obama Care.

Bitter Medicine (Audible Audio Edition) Sara Paretsky Sandra Burr Brilliance Audio Books Reviews

Profit over care has been shown & known many times. This was more convoluted then you might see in a news article. Makes a good read I just don't know that doctors, administrators and gangs travel in the same circles. The story moves quickly and interestingly so you don't have time to nitpick.
Worth every late night hour, Bitter Medicine takes on the greedy and the power-hungry in greater Chicago who damage and murder to save themselves. Paretsky tightly weaves her familiar characters into a mystery involving a relationship for V. I. that takes some courage to read. I identify with Warshawski a strong, smart woman who's skill is amazing and troubles are real.
I enjoyed reading this, my first V. I. Warshawski murder mystery, because I was interested in the story about an indigent patient dying due to lack of treatment at the ER of a profit-minded hospital.
This plot could easily be set now in 2018 and could readily include women’s rights and anti-abortion subplots. Loved the well-written characters, plus the storyline had enough twists to keep any mystery reader happy.
I have enjoyed the author's books for years. I especially like her incorporation of her elderly neighbor and the canine/s as the series progresses. Yet the books stand alone as good reads. I also like the Chicago setting. I do recall, years ago, how she used the word "decanted" to describe driving down an off ramp; it was so vivid and perfect, I've never forgotten it . Let's hope there are more VI stories to come.
I started reading Sara Paretsky when they were first published in the 80's, and always found them exceptionally well written and above the ordinary mystery with great characters and an eye for social commentary as well-defined white collar crime. I've just reread this after more than 20 years and it holds up and I remember why she is one of my favorite authors. I look forward to becoming reacquainted with Vi and Chicago.
Paretsky has a way with both words and plots. You never really know what's coming next. So many mysteries arenpredictable, but not when we're talking V.I. Warshawski, thank you very much. I also find it amusing how often the little details of life figure into the storytelling -- what she's wearing & what she's eating -- two things that the average woman makes note of, sometimes in passing, sometimes as a bigger part of her daily life. Most of all, I appreciate the fact that V.I. is her own woman, not defined by the men who happen to surround and populate her life, as reporters and police officers. They assist her in solving cases, but she is the central character and they are peripheral.
I've long been a fan of Sara Paretsky and her character V.I. Warshawski. This was a second-read for me. If you know the series, you'll know that it's typical V.I. -- she's a stubborn, cranky, pit-bull of a private eye with a chip on her shoulder. The books in this series are not cozy reads; they've got some grit and I get irritated by V.I.'s total lack of diplomacy and mulish independent streak. Yet ... I find myself re-reading the books, so what does that tell you?
